# The Hiring Spree

Full notes with card art: https://ultracapitalism.io/changelog/1.1.0

The biggest content drop since launch: 87 new cards, 54 new events, 25 new vendors and 25 new rivals. Two new keywords come with the wave — **When Sold**, for cards that pay out as you let them go, and **Burnout**, which turns the speed floor into something cards can build around.

## New events

- **The Benefits Renewal** — Renewal's in. The plan is up eighteen percent, which is funny, because the plan is a ping pong table and a tap. I can make the number go away. Say the *word*.
- **Best Places to Work** — I'm doing a list. Best Places to Work. You're shortlisted, apparently, on the strength of a *tap*. Give me a tour and a quote, or I'll write it without you.
- **Free Dinner After Eight** — Free dinner after eight. I've watched it work. They stay for the food, then they stay because they stayed. The nap pods are for the ones who don't get *home*.
- **The Bargaining Table** — First contract. The list isn't money, mostly. A chair that doesn't hurt, lunch that's food, a day off when someone dies. Sign it and I'll stop *counting*.
- **The Burnout Seminar** — Your people are *vibrating*. That's not a compliment, it's a diagnosis. I can slow them down for a fee, or you can keep calling the vibration culture.
- **The Comp Conversation** — So. I've been here a year. I looked up the going rate and it's, um, *more*. I'm not leaving. I'm just asking what we're doing about it.
- **The Compensation Committee** — Comp committee. Two items. A bonus scheme for the executives, or a retreat for *everyone*, which the executives will attend and everyone else will hear about.
- **The Culture Deck** — Slide nine. Two kinds of company: the ones that give people things, and the ones that make people do things. Both work. Pick before slide ten, it's a *fork*.
- **The Exodus** — Three resignations this week. Nobody said it was the perks. Everybody said it was the perks. I have a list of what brings the last two back. It's *short*.
- **The Exposé** — I have the perks memo. I have the exit interviews. I have a photo of the tap, which is a *water* tap now. It runs Sunday. Spin it, settle it, or read it.
- **The Office Fit-Out** — Lease renewal. I'll fit the place out, within reason, and put it on the rent. Game room, nap pods, whatever the kids want. Or desks. Desks are *free*.
- **The Pizza Party** — Payroll's due and the number doesn't work. It works if we skip raises this year. There's a pizza place that does *corporate*. Nobody's ever quit over pizza.
- **The Retraining Program** — Retraining. Word of the year. Some of them will learn to run the machine and some will learn the machine doesn't need running. Either way, it's *training*.
- **The Severance Negotiation** — Severance. Three drafts. A package for them, which is *kind*. A parachute for you, which is prudent. Insurance on all of them, which is what I'd sign.
- **Unlimited PTO** — Unlimited PTO. Say it slowly. Nobody takes it, because nobody knows how much is *too* much, and the ones who guess wrong warn the rest. It costs you nothing.
- **The Boomerang Hire** — Your first intern, now a vice president somewhere with a climbing wall, quit on principle and came back for the old desk with a severance check and firm opinions about where to invest it.
- **The Divestiture** — A conglomerate spun off a division too big to explain to shareholders and too awkward to sell, then left it on your loading dock with the manual.
- **Eminent Domain** — The city condemned an entire block for a stadium that was never built, and somewhere in the settlement paperwork a parcel and a compensation check ended up in your name.
- **Fan Mail** — A stranger who has laminated every one of your press releases arrived at reception with a scrapbook, a packed lunch, and no intention of leaving.
- **New Hire Orientation** — The new hire arrived on a Monday with a lanyard and a signing perk nobody remembers approving, and both of them stayed.
- **Open Enrollment** — HR's enrollment window closed while you were in a meeting, and the default plan turned out to include something the company actually wanted.
- **Orphaned Weights** — A shuttered lab left its model weights on a public server with a readme that just said 'please', and your engineers were the only ones who took it literally.
- **Pro Bono** — A firm that owes you a favor for reasons nobody will put in writing has assigned you a retainer at no charge, no questions, and no end date.
- **The Repo Lot** — A hedge fund's toy collection was repossessed in the night, and the liquidator sold it by the pound to whoever showed up with a tow hitch.
- **The Storage Auction** — You won a delinquent storage unit sight unseen, and behind three boxes of holiday decorations was something worth the drive.
- **The Swag Bag** — Beneath the stress balls, lanyards, and a branded fidget spinner, the conference tote bag turned out to hold one thing of actual value.
- **The Unclaimed Crate** — Customs seized a shipment of live cargo nobody would sign for, and the auction house paid you to get the crate off their floor before it woke up.
- **Underground Meetup** — In the back room of a shuttered bowling alley, a man in a lanyard explained a strategy that was either brilliant or a felony, then left through the kitchen.
- **Upcycling** — The maker space downstairs rebuilt a scrapped industrial unit as a weekend project, then discovered it no longer fit through their own door.
- **Agile Transformation** — A consultant with a whiteboard and a stopwatch. Everything here makes something else go sooner.
- **Benefits Broker** — Plans, perks and programs, brokered on commission. Everything your staff have been asking for, at a markup.
- **The Blind Auction** — Numbered crates on a concrete floor and an auctioneer who will not say what is in them. Bidding starts now.
- **The Boiler Room** — Forty phones, one script, and a bell that rings every time somebody says yes.
- **The Break Room** — The lights hum, the fridge is labelled, and something in the microwave has been there since Q2.
- **The Bullpen** — Desks pushed together in rows. Nobody here does anything alone, and nobody here can be moved.
- **The Burn Unit** — A clinic that never asks how it happened. Every chart on the wall is a bill for somebody else.
- **Chapter Eleven** — A courtroom annex that smells of photocopier toner. Everyone in line has a plan for after the crash.
- **The Check Casher** — A strip-mall storefront with bars on the glass and a rate on the door that changes by the hour.
- **City Hall** — Take a number. The permit desk closes at four, and every form on the wall is aimed at somebody else.
- **The Coffee Cart** — A cart by the elevators. The espresso is free. The crash is not.
- **The Corner Diner** — Coffee's on. The booth in the back is the boardroom, and the meeting starts whenever it clears.
- **The Deal Room** — A conference room with the blinds drawn. Every folder on the table is either a target or a poison pill.
- **Demo Day** — Twelve founders, ten minutes each, one slide that says Uber for X. The coffee is cold and the valuations are not.
- **The Executive Suite** — Top floor, corner office, a view of every company you have not bought yet. The chairs cost more than your first year.
- **The Factory Floor** — Belts, arms and a floor plan that only makes sense once it is running. Nothing here works alone.
- **The Grindstone** — A coworking loft at 2 a.m. Every desk is taken and nobody is going home.
- **K Street** — Marble lobby, brass nameplates, no company name on any of them. Everyone here bills by the hour and votes by the quarter.
- **Loss Prevention** — A windowless office behind the loading dock. Twelve monitors, one chair, and a binder titled Incidents.
- **The Pawn Shop** — Bars on the window, a bell on the door. Everything here is a loan against something you will sell later.
- **The Racetrack** — Tote board, torn tickets, and a man who will tell you the odds if you ask twice.
- **The Server Farm** — Cold aisle, hot aisle, and a badge reader that has never once worked the first time.
- **The Supply Closet** — Shelves of toner, a mop bucket, and a clipboard that says what is left. Somebody has to restock it.
- **The Trust Office** — Leather chairs, a ticking clock, and a ledger where every line is income you did nothing for.
- **The Union Hall** — Folding chairs, a coffee urn and a sign-up sheet. Nobody in this room works past five.

Enjoy the 'lean' startup. I'll send a postcard."; “A well-dressed man interrupts you on the street. ## New features

- **When Sold: a new kind of card effect** — Cards can now carry an effect that fires when you sell them, at the Tier you sold them at: a permanent Valuation or Revenue bump, or a random asset of a chosen size in hand. Some cards react to other sales instead and grow for good — Salvage Yard gains Profit every time you sell a Machine.
- **Burnout: the speed floor gets a keyword and a flame** — No asset acts more than once a second, and speed pushed past that is now lost rather than banked. An asset the floor is pacing is Burned Out: it catches fire on the board, flares again on every Fast Track or Overwork that lands while it burns, and cools off one clean recharge after the pushing stops. Cards can pay off on it — Whenever one of your assets Burns Out, when an Employee stops being Burned Out, Scale +2 while Burned Out, Overwork your Burned Out Employees.

## Improvements

- **Benefit: a tag for the perks** — Employee perks are their own tribe now. Wellness Program, Sabbatical, Mental Health Day, Overtime Pay, Sympathy Card, Catered Lunch, Lunch 'n Learn, Coffee Chat, Corporate Retreat, Executive Bonus, Expense Account, Sales Training and Golden Parachute are Benefits rather than Schemes; Coffee Machine, Ping Pong Table, Nap Pod, Kombucha Tap, Comfy Chair, Personal Trainer and Noise-Cancelling Headphones are Benefits as well as what they were.
- **Cards can act on the asset that triggered them** — A reaction can now name "it": Slow the rival asset that just Burned Out, Liquidate whichever asset cools off. Cards can also count how many assets are Burned Out.

## Bug fixes

- **Surplus reactions no longer fire on the rival's overflow** — Cards and Policies that read "whenever you Surplus" were also firing when the rival's Cash overflowed. They now react only to your own Surplus, as written.
